Frequently asked questions
Which states have no income tax on wages?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Washington still has payroll premiums such as paid family leave, so it is not covered here yet.
How is hourly pay converted to a yearly salary?
We multiply your hourly rate by 2,080 hours, which is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.
Does a 401(k) contribution lower Social Security and Medicare tax?
No. Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce the wages used for federal income tax, but Social Security and Medicare still apply to your full gross pay.
Why does my real paycheck differ from this estimate?
Actual withholding depends on your W-4, health insurance and other pre-tax benefits, credits, local taxes and your pay schedule. This tool estimates your annual tax using the standard deduction, so treat it as a close guide, not a payroll statement.
