Why some months have three paychecks
A biweekly paycheck comes every 14 days, so there are 26 of them in a normal year. A calendar has 12 months, so two months end up holding three paydays. If you are paid twice a month (24 checks) or monthly (12 checks), no month ever has three.
2026 is not a leap year, which matters. If your first biweekly payday of the year is January 1, you get 27 paychecks, because the paydays repeat every 14 days through December 31 and that pattern fits one more check into the year. For every other first payday you get 26 checks.

How to budget the extra paycheck
Do not plan your monthly bills around a three-check month. Divide your yearly take-home pay by 12 and budget on that amount, as the calculator above shows. Then treat each third paycheck as extra. Common uses are building a cash cushion, paying down a debt, or topping up retirement savings. To see what each check is after tax, use the paycheck calculator.
What about weekly pay?
Weekly paydays repeat every 7 days, giving 52 paychecks in most years. If your weekly payday falls on Thu, the weekday of January 1 in 2026, you get 53 paychecks, and some months have five paychecks instead of four.
